Project Description
Diaz·Yourman & Associates (DYA) provided geotechnical services for the Hyperion Digester Gas Utilization Project, which will consist of replacing existing process equipment with new process equipment within the Energy Recovery Building (ERB) located near the northern border of the Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant. The mission of this project was to help meet the electric and thermal needs of the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (HWRP), improve the overall energy generation efficiency through steam production, reduce the environmental impacts of power and steam generation, and utilize HWRP's digester gas as a renewable energy source.
The purpose of DYA's services was to provide geotechnical input, consisting of reviewing data; conducting a field exploration; performing laboratory tests on selected samples; and performing engineering analyses to develop conclusions and recommendations regarding subsurface conditions, geology and seismic hazards, site preparation and grading, foundation type and allowable bearing capacity, estimated total and differential foundation settlements, resistance to lateral loads, lateral earth pressures, slab-on-grade support, and soil corrosion potential; and preparing a geotechnical report. The primary geotechnical considerations include approximately 3 feet of uncertified fill that should not be used to support new foundations or slabs-on-grade and the impacts of new foundation loads on existing underground structures that will remain in place.
