Project Description
As part of the Port's grand revitalization of the San Pedro Waterfront, this project is the portion that will connect downtown San Pedro and the surrounding Southland communications with the waterfront by realigning, expanding, and transforming Sampson Way into a scenic, four-lane thoroughfare from 7th Street to 22nd Street. Specific project elements include:
- Expand Sampson Way to consist of two travel lanes in each direction
- Redesign the intersections at 7th Street/Harbor Boulevard and 6th Street/Harbor Boulevard to improve access to the waterfront
- Realign the Waterfront Red Car Line between Swinford Street and 22nd Street
- Landscape improvements on Harbor Boulevard between Swinford Street and Crescent Avenue
- Incorporation of public art into the project design
Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) provided geotechnical engineering services, including review and analysis of existing information, site inspection, underground utility location and notifications, a field investigation consisting of borings and CPTs, laboratory testing, geotechnical engineering analyses, a soil data report, and recommendations for design. DYA provided recommendations for seismic design; foundation and/or bedding recommendations for retaining walls, vaults, storm drains, and light poles; pavement design; grading for trench excavation, backfill and shoring, site grading, fill placement and compaction, subgrade preparation for foundations and footings; and soil corrosion potential. Construction support services are currently being provided.
