Project Description
Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) provided geotechnical services for many onshore structures and improvements for a marina addition. This is Phase II of the Cabrillo Marina project, which serves as an expansion of the existing Cabrillo Marina, Phase I. The development included several one- and two-story commercial and retail buildings. These structures varied in plan area from 10,000 to 20,000 square feet. Offshore improvements included adding new fill areas contained by rock dikes, improving/stabilizing existing dredge and rock slopes, and placing new marina guide piles. Key design concerns included new sea retaining walls, stability of proposed and existing soil and rock slopes, filling new areas, dredging and reuse of soft clayey soils, dredging of hard rock materials, and pile driving into rock. We provided recommendations for pile installation into the rock.
The project consisted of dredging, constructing bulkhead sea walls, creating land areas, constructing rock slopes, removing a triangular area of land along the Basin’s northern slope, constructing one- to two-story buildings, and constructing new asphalt concrete paved roads, parking areas, and a pedestrian boardwalk. DYA provided all geotechnical investigations and recommendations for construction, and assisting during bid support and services during construction. DYA's services during construction included oversight and direction for the deep soil mixing, jet grouting, indicator pile program, production piles for landside improvements, and earthwork.
DYA previously completed a geotechnical investigation in 1999 for this project site, but they put the project on hold. In 2006, work began again, but with scope and project elements changed. The project completed in 2008.
