Project Description
The proposed project consisted of the addition of two new facilities to the TBIT building. One facility consisted of a two-story building planned immediately adjacent to the north side of the TBIT building and the second building consisted of a single-story, at-grade structure planned on the south side of the TBIT building. Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) performed a geotechnical investigation and provided a written report with recommendations. The key geotechnical concerns included seismic criteria, foundation support, excavations adjacent to existing structures, shoring design, foundation settlements, and corrosion potential.
Numerous existing utilities and foundations were within and near the project site. Some utilities needed relocating and some were to remain in place. Baggage cart bridges, supported on shallow foundations, were to remain in place and crossed the project sites. The existing TBIT building was supported on shallow foundations. The new facilities foundations and improvements would need to consider existing improvements that would remain in place.
Two years after the initial geotechnical investigation was completed, LAWA determined that the two-story building needed to be redesigned to a five-story building. DYA prepared an amended geotechnical report to review the loads and foundation plan of the new structure, perform additional analyses to estimate foundation bearing pressures and settlement, and revise recommendations as necessary. DYA performed services in less than two weeks in order to expedite plan check and begin construction. Revisions and additions to the overall project included revisions to the north building, interior improvements to the TBIT building, and adding a new baggage screening facility, future fleet parking, and five new passenger jetways. DYA also provided construction observation and monitoring during foundation installation.
