Project Description

Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) provided geotechnical consulting services for the preparation of a Project Study Report (PSR) for the proposed replacement of the existing Gerald Desmond Bridge.  The project was designed to improve the flow of existing traffic traveling across the bridge, replace the physically deteriorated existing structure, and increase the vertical clearance beneath the bridge for the shipping traffic that passes below.  The bridge has a 1,000-foot span that crosses the deep-water navigable channel connecting the Port’s middle and inner harbors and a vertical clearance of up to 200 feet.  The project includes two new approach structures to the new main span, two transition structures connecting Ocean Boulevard to Harbor Scenic Drive, and four connector ramps connecting Ocean Boulevard to Pier T Lane and Pico Boulevard.

DYA prepared an environmental initial site assessment (ISA) for the entire alignment in general accordance with Caltrans’ Project Development Procedure Manual (PDPM) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E 1527-97, Standard Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Process.  In addition, an ISA checklist in accordance with Caltrans requirements was also completed.  DYA also provided 35% foundation design recommendations for the connectors at I-710 and POLB Gate 5.
